Overview
Located in Western Europe, Luxembourg is a landlocked country neighboring Belgium, France, and Germany. With an economy similar in many ways to its neighbor, Germany, Luxembourg is the world’s third-wealthiest country in terms of GDP per capita, and Europe’s wealthiest in terms of PPP. Luxembourg enjoys a degree of economic prosperity extremely rare among western countries and has one of the highest current account surpluses as a share of GDP in Europe. A founding member of the European Union, Luxembourg keeps a healthy budgetary position, with a surplus of about 0.9% of its GDP in 2019. This prosperous economy is largely driven by the banking, steel, and industrial sectors. Luxembourg has the 25th most competitive financial center in the world, and third most competitive in Europe after London and Zürich according to the 2019 Global Financial Centres Index.
Luxembourg has a rich historic heritage and was the first place to be awarded the title of “European Capital of Culture” twice. Besides, the City of Luxembourg itself is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage. This diverse cultural heritage is also evident in its higher education system. In addition to the University of Luxembourg, the country’s flag star university, Luxembourg is also home to 3 Higher Education Institutes and some foreign universities like the Open University Luxembourg, an outpost of the British Open University, the Sacred Heart University Luxembourg, and the Miami University Dolibois European Center (MUDEC). International students and Luxembourgers can also study business and management, arts, and healthcare for three years, in lycées techniques to receive a Brevet de Technicien Supérieur (BTS).
